Patient Participation Group

Report 2013/14

MOUNT CHAMBERS SURGERY

In our first Patient Participation Group Report in March 2012, we reported that we had recruited 43 members. This has now grown to 56 and the members are active in our key areas for improvement in 2013/14, namely our Appointment System and New Premises

The numbers below give a breakdown by age, sex and ethnicity for the group and our population.  Within the group we have managed to recruit a wide variety of patients from the very healthy through to those with chronic diseases, mobility issues and disabilities. In terms of lifestyle the group includes a teenager, a young parent, a commuter, and some retired patients. We believe this group is broadly representative of our total patient population.

Our Patient Survey

Our Patient survey, completed and published in April 2013 helped our Patient Participation Group determine our priorities for 2013/14. These were:

1.        To redesign our Appointment System

2.        To bid for and start a Campaign for New Premises

3.        Consult our Patient Participation Group on the survey questions for March 2014

PROGRESS in 2013/14

The Appointment System

Our Appointment System was redesigned in July 2013. Our rationale for doing so was to create greater accessibility for patients and address many of the comments that had been received in our survey. Those comments are available to view on the web site.

We have now stopped the 48 hour booking of appointments. We now have “advanced booking”appointments that can be booked with the doctor of choice up to six weeks ahead. These appointments are also available on the internet. We also have “on the day” appointments for booking with any doctor for conditions that cannot wait for an advanced appointment. A patient information leaflet, explaining these changes, is attached as Appendix 1.

Our intention is to monitor these changes closely and to repeat the patient survey in conjunction with our Patient Participation Group.

Campaign for New Premises

Once again, in response to patients’ comments, we bid for New Premises in 2012. A formal bid was presented to the PCT in October 2012.

Unfortunately, the PCT, once again rejected this bid, the 5th time it has done so. We therefore started a Campaign to ensure the PCT were aware of the views of our patients. We also asked our patients their views on closing our list to new patients until a new development becomes available.

After 3 weeks of this campaign over 1100 of our patients completed our survey.

99.4% are in favour of our Campaign for new premises

95.6% are in favour of closing our list to new patients

We therefore made a formal application to the PCT to close our list.

Patients were also asked to free text their comments and over 300 patients chose to do so.

We therefore rebid in October 2013 with the following consequences:

Result Of Campaign

After nearly ten years of trying to move to new premises, the end finally seems to be in sight.

In March 2014 ,NHS England Area Team, based in Chelmsford, approved our Business for a new building. This is a major step forward after we have had seven previous bids rejected or postponed.

Practice Manager, Peter Hadfield said; “We are hoping for a brand new surgery at a brand new site. The new building will be about three times our current size and be a modern, clean facility for our patients and staff.

The new building will allow Mount Chambers to provide more NHS services locally and to expand to absorb an increase inpatients as Braintree grows.

We would like to say a big thank you to all our patients and Patient Participation Group who helped us in our campaign. We received nearly 10,000 comments and responses to our survey undertaken last year and this had a major influence on the decision of NHS England.

Over the next few months, we will be negotiating on suitable sites and undertaking some more detailed planning.

We will keep you informed of progress.

Choosing the Questions for our Patient Survey

For this third year of our Patient Participation Group we decided to do the patient survey ourselves instead of using a company as in previous years.

Our Patient Participation group was asked to comment on these survey questions and they were approved. Following this we handed out surveys to patients as they came in for appointments, plus spent time in the waiting areas to explain why these surveys are so important to both the surgery and patients.

We will share the results with our Patient Participation group and use the results to determine topics for improvement for  2014/15.

The Future

We would welcome additional members to the PPG. If you would like to become involved in this process please ask at reception, telephone 01376 556982, or email   jeanettegrant@nhs.net
